Special Equipment: Leather gear. Handcuffs and key. Gym clothes. Note taking materials. Red-Handle (such as ASP) handgun and a Red-Handle long-gun (if available).

Course Goal: This is a 24-hour intensive format course designed for peace officers and current defensive tactics and/or arrest & control instructors for the purpose of enhancing their skills and knowledge in the critical area of gun retention and/or to teach gun retention. The course presents an extensive study of handgun and long-gun retention techniques under a wide range of situations. The course covers the P.O.S.T. Perishable Skills Program in Arrest & Control.
Course Objectives
I. Demonstrate proficiency in the physical techniques of gun retention to include: Handgun retention with gun-in-hand and holstered and long gun retention under a wide range of attacks. Also to include a thorough study of stance, positioning, footwork and movement, roll and recovery, control holds, take-downs and prone handcuffing.
II. Demonstrate an understanding of the principles and tactics of Defensive Tactics (Arrest & Control and Self-Defense) including tactical decision making, tactical concepts, awareness model and officer performance in close combat situations.
III. Demonstrate an understanding of holster selection criteria.
Instructors: Lead instructor is Rod Sanford, P.I.D.T. Director. Assistant instructors are all certified Defensive Tactics, Arrest & Control and Gun Retention instructors.
